Intermodal Expressive Arts Therapy is based on the idea that all creative forms of expression derive from the same source; hence, all art forms are available to play with during sessions. Intermodal therapists are trained specifically in how to guide clients to move between various artistic modalities. These "intermodal transfers" can help clients become "unstuck" and, through this process, clients often discover something new or unexpected about themselves and/or the situation at hand.
Intermodal work focuses on poiesis, the creative act of bringing something into being that didn't exist before. By externalizing previously internal thoughts and images, clients and therapists are able to play with, transform, and eventually re-integrate newly-emerging insights. The process of creating is honored and emphasized instead of the product, so one does not have to be an artist (in any art form!) to participate effectively in the process.
