In this second workshop in the series "Introduction to Expressive Arts Therapy", we explore healing practices that promote movement, imagination, and spontaneity, allowing clients the opportunity to break free of calcified personal narratives and rehearse new behaviors in a low-risk environment.
The latest research on therapeutic efficacy suggests that augmenting traditional talk therapy with embodied strategies helps clients bypass intellectual defenses so they can better integrate learning and growth. This three-hour workshop will help both new and experienced clinicians learn to incorporate established, creative techniques to encourage clients to take risks, move beyond the trap of overthinking, and increase spontaneity, thereby participating more fully in their own treatment. During this experiential workshop, participants will be introduced to the tenets of “action-based modalities” such as Drama Therapy and Psychodrama, learn the appropriate use of these techniques with different populations, and understand the ways in which professionals of various backgrounds can ethically incorporate arts-based healing practices within their own work. Participants will have the chance to engage in exercises, embodied activities, and Sacred Witnessing throughout the workshop. This workshop is targeted towards mental health professionals, educators, and/or artists; however, anyone interested is welcome to attend. No prior arts experience is necessary! Just come willing to play and to be surprised by what emerges. |
